There's no question that summer is here in Eastern North Carolina, and we're seeing record-breaking temperatures across much of the United States. Unfortunately, with the warm weather comes an increased chance for certain pests. That's because the life cycle of certain insects speeds up when the temperature climbs. This can bring exponential growth in insect populations. Some of the most common pests in the summer are mosquitoes, ticks, fire ants, wasps, and termites. But don't worry; Pestech of Greenville is here to help keep your home pest-free from these heat-loving bugs. 1. Mosquitoes For the most part, a mosquito bite is just annoying and extremely itchy. However, in some parts of the world, mosquitoes can carry diseases like West Nile Virus, Malaria, and Yellow Fever. To decrease the presence of mosquitoes on your property, we recommend adding mosquito control to your quarterly service. Our integrated pest management technicians are trained in various measures to reduce mosquito populations. We use North Carolina approved larvicide pellets and insecticide mists to kill adult mosquitoes and prevent mosquito larvae from hatching. Another easy way to prevent mosquitoes is by reducing standing water. Some of the most common sources of standing water include buckets, dog bowls, patio furniture, trashcan lids, and flowerpots. Make sure to also keep your yard clean, your gutters free of debris, and store outdoor equipment in a closed space. 2. Ticks When ticks aren't attached to a host, they spend their time in moist soil or on tall grass and weeds. Be sure to keep these areas mowed or trimmed down around your home and property to reduce places for them to live. Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees. Stay on wide, clear paths and avoid overgrown weedy areas when spending time outside. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Finally, always check yourself and your children for ticks before coming inside. They can ride home on your clothing and pets and attach to a person later. 3. Fire Ants They may be small in size, but fire ants can be a real nuisance and are a common species of ant in North Carolina. Fire ants are known to sting humans if their nests are disturbed, and it's often times not just one sting, but many. The sting is painful for humans and animals alike. Some stings can leave a red mark on humans, sometimes turning into a raised welt that becomes itchy and irritated. Our trained and talented technicians are skilled in putting out the fire in fire ants. We offer three options for fire ant service. This includes treatments that cover the entire year, three months, or as an add-on to quarterly service. 4. Wasps Although wasps don't typically go out of their way to sting, they can become hostile if disturbed. Stings can be painful but are generally non-threatening. Wasps make their nests and hives in trees and areas and under your home's roof. Keeping the areas around your home and property clean and free of potential food sources will help keep wasps away. If you're hosting a summer cookout, make sure to keep all cooked food covered and clean up spills right after they happen. 5. Termites Did you know termites cause more than $5 billion worth of damage to homes and properties each year? To keep termites at bay, it's important to inspect your home's foundation regularly, especially in the summer when termites are most active. This includes basement windows near the ground, crawlspaces, and wooden porches. Diverting any water away from your home, creating a gap between the soil and the wood, and repairing leaks immediately are easy ways to prevent termites from running your summer fun. No matter the pest, and no matter the time of year, we're here to help. We have made it our priority to provide integrated pest management with guaranteed results.
